Eastern Market Green Stormwater Management Strategy
Detroit, MI (2015)
The Eastern Market Green Stormwater Management Strategy proposes district-wide sustainable stormwater management strategies that capture runoff, reduce drainage charges paid by property owners, beautify the neighborhood, and provide environmental education opportunities. The study was prompted by Eastern Market Corporation’s interest in taking a more proactive approach to stormwater management as well as the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department’s need to reduce its combined sewer overflows and treatment costs.
DCDC's role was to research and develop conceptual designs of integrated stormwater management systems into the Eastern Market district.
This proposal lays the framework for a viable plan to disconnect hundreds of acres of stormwater catchment from the combined sewer system. This plan would be a massive win for clean water and an example of a proactive green infrastructure partnership between public and private stakeholders that is unprecedented in scale.
